Easy though with this app. Waterproof/snow pants, snow gloves, snow jacket and snow gaiters are highly recommended as well! A good powdery 2-4 inches covered the ground all the way from the Loj to the Dam. This bald peak offers a great view of Marcy and Skylight as well as Colden. The trail is fairly easy until you get to the final portion (where you turn right/West to the summit). North trail much steeper than South trail - nice views in the fall. Spikes are necessary about halfway up. Get to the LOJ early if you want a parking spot. The views from the top are hard to beat, and as far as the trail goes, it’s not the most challenging or longest of the high peaks. Unfortunately, trees obscure the view to the S. While on the trail keep an eye out for the large bolt placed in the rock by Verplanck Colvin during the 1876 survey near the E side of the summit. The easiest hike up Mount Marcy is to take the south leg up and back. The views left me wanting more. All in all, it was good experience for winter mountaineering (my first time really climbing a mountain in winter conditions) and I hope to come back with a group in the late spring/summer. took the north trail up which was has brief steep climbs but overall a smooth hike. Spikes and in a week or two, snowshoes are a must. The south trail is very serpentine. We were first on the trail at 10am and had an easy hike to the lookout which was steep for last section. Would have been extreme difficulty to navigate without. Spikes are needed after Indian falls enough ice on rock faces to turn you back down if you don’t have. Past Indian Falls (still running and exposed) visibility really took a hit and mist permeated the trail, could not see into the trees past 50 yards (it just became a dreamy white nothingness) and some of the high pines along the trail had whited out/faded tops from the lack of visibility. The Great Range snakes through the peaks from Route 73 like an arrow shot toward Mount Marcy’s summit. Quick and pretty easy with a nice view right off the south trail just before the summit. Made it back to the loj by 3:30. Once you have reached the dam, you begin climbing up rocky terrain, as the trail is mostly boulders, and this persists most of the way from there on. It didn't help that I blew out my left knee (happens from time to time) about 1/3 of the way down the mountain, so I was basically operating with only 1.5 legs. this can quickly ruin your day. For the first 3/4 of the hike there was minimal visibility, I was bumming due to this but the closer I got to tree line I started to see blue skies and then on top of Marcy you were well above an entire layer of clouds. That being said, there isn't any exposure on this trail...and it's not like you could kill yourself...but you certainly could get some nasty cuts and bruises (at best) or a broken limb (at worst). The Mount Marcy trail provides a short, steep hiking experience with breathtaking views, especially during the fall and spring, when there is less foliage. It has been dry so the trail conditions were solid but I could see them getting slippery if it had just rained. Visibility was low but manageable because you had reference points. Visibility was really bad as I started to ascend and it only got worse, footing was precarious because often what I thought were rocks along the trail would be a 2-3 foot deep snow drift. Most curious of all, this is the only mountain in my life which took me longer to descend than to ascend. be sure your boots are completely waterproof before making this climb! The parking lot holds 6-8 cars. Thankful I left the trail runners and went with more of a waterproof boot. A fair amount of time on trail without views. Challenging but fun. Nearly the entire trail was covered with ice. I saw no trailblazing on the hike down. Marcy is further away. But the descent went from enjoyable to grueling to miserable to utterly wretched over the course of the next nearly 5 hours, culminating with me spending the last half hour furiously speed-walking through the woods with my dimly-illuminating headlamp to try to reach my wife who was waiting for me by the Adirondack Loj.
